BETTY PRICE
Betty Price is a new Haven Society Board member. She is a nurse and midwife, who, for the last 15 yrs has worked in hospital administration. An ex graduate of the University of Victoria where she obtained a Bachelor of Nursing and Masters in Education degrees.
Betty has three children and four grandchildren. Her volunteer work began in the United Kingdom where she worked for many years with the Save the Children Society. Currently she volunteers for the Haven Society; The John Howard Society; Oceanside Volunteer Organization and is a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women and the Qualicum Women’s Institute.
Betty is a strong believer in human rights.
BARBARA METCALF
Barbara has been a board member since 2003 but has been working to end violence against women for many years. She is a Clinical Nurse Educator at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Since moving to Nanaimo 5 1/2 years ago, she has become a member of the Nanaimo Theatre Group and a member of the Area A Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. Barbara lives with her partner, 4 cats and dog in Cedar.
Claire enjoys her work on the board. She believes every community needs to build a culture of safety and equality for women, children, and families.
JOY HUNTER - President
Joy and her husband Mike retired to Nanaimo in 1999. She had worked in the federal government for 30+ years in both Ottawa and Vancouver, the last ten working in the Marketing and Customer Service Departments with the Vancouver International Airport Authority. Her volunteer work in Nanaimo began with the Senior Social Activation Program at Traveller's Lodge. She joined Haven in April of 2002 and has been a Board member since July of 2003. Joy is also a Sales Rep with A.A. Advertising Ltd., a promotional products firm. Between her and Mike, they have four children and four grandchildren. "I am certainly enjoying my involvement with Haven and look forward to many more years."
SUSAN MURPHY - Treasurer
Since moving to Nanaimo with her husband eight years ago, Susan has been involved with a variety of community groups. She is currently the Regional Director for Vancouver Island for the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), Member of the Board of Management of Elder College, and an active supporter of Global Village. She is a member of CFUW Nanaimo’s Status of Women and Human Rights Committee and the Chair of the Scholarship Committee. While living in Winnipeg, Susan was on the board of Women in Second Stage Housing (WISH).Susan worked in senior capacities for the federal and provincial governments in Manitoba. She spent the last 13 years in the health sector and ended her career as the Regional Director of Contract Management and Capital Planning for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Susan has a CMA and BA and is now retired from paid work.
DEBBE PATTERSON
Debbe has worked as a Certified Financial Planner at Investors Group for over eleven years. She has been married for 24 years, has two sons, one step son, and two grandchildren. For thirteen years she was involved with her children’s school PAC’s in the capacity of fundraiser, usually the chair person. She also has volunteer experience with Festival of Trees, Scouts Canada as both chairperson of the committee as well as a beaver leader and chairperson of the decorating committee for Dover Bay Prom, apple pie sales coordinator. She also taught Financial Planning to Grade 11 CAP students at Dover Bay School three or four times a year, 2 hour sessions, for four years, as well as many other volunteer jobs at various locations. Debbe loves to travel the world and also hopes to continue to volunteer in other countriesDebbe loves to organize events and in the past she has organized many events for 20 to as many as 300 people at different locations including the Port Theatre. These were client events, fundraisers and seminars.
ANNE BEAUCHAMP
Anne Beauchamp has been a Haven volunteer for four years, sitting on the Resource Development Committee. She is a resident of Parksville and has been a business owner there for 12 years. Previously she lived in Edmonton, where she was involved with the sports community. She has coached girls’ softball, was on the board for District 69 Slo-pitch for eight years, and was a player and an umpire for the organization.
CHARLOTTE MARY CHINN
Mary Chinn, born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, lived most of her life in Quebec. She has five children. Mary has been ‘passionate’ about volunteer community involvement which started when her father explained to her the meaning of being a ‘good citizen’.Mary, following her high school graduation, studied at St. Francis Xavier University, Mount Saint Vincent University and McGill University. She has a BSc and Diploma in Human Resource Management. Mary worked for the Dept. of External Affairs (Foreign Service Abroad). She has considerable organizational and board experience in fields of education, municipal, health/medical, and various community organizations. Mary, this year, before her move to Nanaimo, was CFUW Regional Director Quebec English Clubs, Board member of the community Resource Information Centre, past President St. Mary’s Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and member of their Advisory Council, as well as a past member of the Hospital Foundation. She was also a Board Member of the Victorian Order of Nurses. Close to Mary’s heart was the West Island Palliative Care Centre where she worked for the past three years. She volunteered on the desk of the Bai d’Urfe Library and was a member of the Pastoral Council and Board of Wardens of her Church.Mary is a creative thinker, enjoys new challenges and the development of interpersonal working relationships. She hopes her knowledge and skills will b e useful in helping Haven Society continue its very important work.
KATHY ROVERE
Kathy has been a Haven volunteer since 2003, working in the Community Victim Services program. There she assists the program coordinator with the Domestic Violence Emergency Response System. Her working career was in health care. She taught in both the Practical Nursing program and the Diploma Nursing program at Malaspina College. She also developed curriculum for the College’s Nanny Program and provided instruction for the program as well. Kathy is a long-time Nanaimo resident.
