JOY HUNTER
Joy, with her husband Mike, retired from North Vancouver to Nanaimo in 1999. This was after 10 years of working for the Marketing and Customer Service Departments for the Vancouver International Airport and before that 20 + years as a federal servant for various departments in Ottawa. She did the usual “mom” volunteering” that comes with raising children in both Ottawa and Vancouver. In Nanaimo, she became involved with the Senior Social Activation Program at Traveller’s Lodge and then in 2002 joined Haven as a volunteer. In 2003, she joined the Board and now is completing her first term as President.

CLAIRE LESSARD
Claire enjoys her work on the board. She believes every community needs to build a culture of safety and equality for women, children, and families. She earned a B.A. and M.A. and worked at universities in Canada, Asia and the Middle East for over thirty years.
SUSAN MURPHY
Susan moved to Nanaimo with her husband in 2000. She has been involved with a variety of community groups, and is currently the Vice President for British Columbia and President of the BC Council for the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). She is also a member of CFUW Nanaimo’s Status of Women and Human Rights Committee. While living in Winnipeg, Susan was on the board of directors of Women in Second Stage Housing (WISH).
Susan worked in senior capacities for the federal and provincial governments in
Manitoba. She spent the last 13 years in the health sector and ended her career as the Regional Director of Contract Management and Capital Planning for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Susan has a CMA and BA and is now retired from paid work.
KATHY ROVERE
Kathy has volunteered with the Haven Community Victim Services program since 2003. There she is involved in the client Drop In service and the Domestic Violence Emergency Response System program. Her working career was in health care. She worked as a critical care nurse then taught in nursing programs at VI University until her retirement. Kathy is a long-time Nanaimo resident.
BETTY PRICE
Betty Price is a Haven Society Board member. She is a nurse and midwife, who, for the last 15 years of her professional life worked in hospital administration. She is a graduate of the University of Victoria where she obtained a Bachelor of Nursing and Masters in Education degrees. Betty has three children and four grandchildren. Her volunteer work began in the United Kingdom where she worked for many years with the Save the Children Society. Currently she volunteers for the Haven Society; The John Howard Society; Oceanside Volunteer Organization and is a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, the Qualicum Women’s Institute, and Hospice Society. Betty is a strong believer in human rights.
MARILYNNE CHAPMAN
Marilyn Chapman is a faculty member at Vancouver Island University. She teaches in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program as well as holding administrative responsibilities in a secondment position with a consortium of nursing schools that offer the same curriculum. Marilyn has an undergraduate degree in nursing and a Masters of Adult Education. Her Masters studies led to a strong interest in issues surrounding lack of voice, disenfranchisement and empowerment and ultimately feminist theory and feminist pedagogy. These interests have led her into teaching courses on community development, health promotion and global health issues. Action aimed at decreasing violence directed at women, as well as increasing awareness of addiction issues, has been a strong emphasis in these courses. Supervising practicum students in these courses has brought Marilyn in contact with numerous community agencies in the Central Island area. She is thrilled to be offered the opportunity to give a little more to the Nanaimo community through working with Haven Society.
MURIELLE FISETTE-HANNA
Murielle Fisette-Hanna has a background in accounting, finance and corporate compliance. Her past careers have been varied and allowed her to gain the knowledge and expertise she requires to fulfill her duties on the board. Raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Murielle migrated west to Calgary where she spent 17 years. She now lives with her husband in Lantzville. She is the mother of three, stepmother of two and grandmother of four. She has found the time she devotes to the Society very rewarding and looks forward to continuing her involvement with Haven Society.
CAROLLYNE HAYNES
Carollyne’s working career was mainly in health care administration, both in Nanaimo and on the Lower Mainland. Prior to that she was a Member’s Assistant on Parliament Hill, Ottawa before taking ten years away from the workforce to raise her family. Volunteer work has always been an important part of Carollyne’s life, serving on such boards as the Nanaimo United Way, Brechin United Church, Parksville/Qualicum Community Foundation and the NDP (both Federal and Provincial). She is now retired and lives in Qualicum Beach with her husband, Jim. She has three children and two grandchildren.
